Partying with P Diddy
P Diddy
P Diddy: Party reported to cost $1m
News image

P Diddy, the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, has been celebrating his 33rd birthday in style in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

About 300 guests were flown in on chartered jets from New York and Paris on Friday to attend the bash, including Naomi Campbell, Ivana Trump, Tommy Lee and Gerard Depardieu.

They are due to fly out on Tuesday. I was not invited - but I managed to gatecrash it anyway.

At one point P Diddy was up on the table shaking his booty with the belly-dancers

At P Diddy's pool party at his rented villa outside Marrakech on Saturday afternoon, guests were chilling out.

They were still recovering from the night before, when they had been up partying to at least 8am.

American and French rap artists, dancers, film-makers, actors and models had kicked off the evening at an exclusive French-Moroccan restaurant, with Berber musicians, Arabian dancers and jugglers providing the entertainment.

At one point P Diddy was up on the table shaking his booty with the belly-dancers.

Then they descended on the New Feeling nightclub just outside town, and then back to Puffy's villa.

So fortunately no-one had enough energy to notice the unfashionably-dressed woman who had sneaked in uninvited to the pool party, which was a strictly journalist-free zone.

Beautiful models and dancers in bikinis and sarongs draped themselves around the turquoise pool in front of the villa, which resembled a pink Moorish palace, while other guests lazed among the palm trees.

Gerard Depardieu

P Diddy himself floated out of his boudoir at around 6pm in a white Moroccan kaftan.

I was trying at first to keep a low profile in case Puffy's press man spotted me and threw me out.

But after a couple of glasses of champagne I decided to enjoy myself, and dived in to the pool for a solitary swim.

Unfortunately I had not brought my swimsuit, and can only laugh at how unstylish I must have looked swimming in my underwear.

At 7pm I hitched a ride on one of the minibuses taking guests back to their five-star hotels in time to get ready for that evening's do - a private party at the home of French-Moroccan actor Jamel Debouze.

Marrakesh
Marrakesh: The party had an Arabian nights theme
Debouze had organised the weekend and was footing much of the bill, reported to be about $1m.

Camels and snake-charmers greeted us at the entrance to his villa, in a palm grove just outside Marrakech.

Guests schmoozed in the candle-lit gardens, or had parts of their bodies tattooed with henna.

French rap dancers did their thing, while leggy women with impossibly high heels and tight designer dresses made sure they were seen.

Guests could laze on opulent cushions, eat Moroccan sweatmeats and watch dancers perform on flying carpets

The open-air dance-floor next to the pool got busy at around 1am, with the DJ playing top dance music, accompanied by a laser light show.

P Diddy and close friends spent the evening up on a private terrace. When I tried to go up the stairs to it I was blocked by security men. This exclusive party obviously was not quite exclusive enough for him.

Ivana Trump

The next day guests were taken out to a lake in the Atlas mountains that surround the city, where jet-skiing, quad biking and camel riding were available for the energetic - or massage for the worse for wear.

Sunday evening was the highlight of the weekend - Puffy's birthday party at the beautiful 19th Century marble Bahia Palace.

Decked out like something from the Arabian nights, guests could laze on opulent cushions, eat Moroccan sweatmeats and watch dancers perform on flying carpets, or get down to more modern music.

But by then this party animal was exhausted, and bowed out. Gate-crashing two of P Diddy's parties was enough for me.
