| Wednesday, 23 October, 2002, 17:06 GMT 18:06 UK BBC buys Spielberg's sci-fi series ![]() Eight-year-old Dakota Fanning plays the main role A new sci-fi television mini-series produced by Steven Spielberg will be shown by the BBC after the corporation acquired its UK rights. The show, Taken, follows the stories of three families over 50 years of alien abductions. It will be premi�red on the Sci-Fi Channel in the United States in December before being shown on BBC Two and BBC Choice in early 2003.
Spielberg, one of the most successful big screen directors of the last 20 years, is named as executive producer. It follows a similar role he took on hit World War II drama Band of Brothers. "I am also pleased to know that the BBC, which has long been a part of my life, has expanded their relationship with its commitment to Taken," he said. Sue Deeks, senior editor of acquired series at the BBC, said: "Taken is a compelling science fiction drama. "We are truly delighted with this acquisition which we know will thrill and entertain BBC viewers." Stars A young girl, Allie, played by eight-year-old Dakota Fanning, will be at the centre of Taken. Fanning recently starred in the film I Am Sam with Sean Penn. She will be joined by Matt Frewer, best-known for playing Max Headroom, and Heather Donahue, who starred in The Blair Witch Project. Writer Leslie Bohem played in Sparks' supporting band and also wrote 1997 action film Dante's Peak. When Taken begins, viewers will be transported to the skies over France during World War II.
