| Tuesday, 22 October, 2002, 09:17 GMT 10:17 UK Radiohead win Q award ![]() Radiohead are favourites among Q readers Radiohead have left Oasis disappointed as they took Q music magazine's best act in the world award for the second year running. Despite being nominated in three categories, Oasis failed to collect a single award.
After their recent success in the American charts, Coldplay took best album for A Rush of Blood to the Head. Triumphing over the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Doves, The Vines and Beth Orton, the award followed Coldplay's success in 2000 for Parachutes. Perhaps surprisingly for a magazine better known for earnest guitar-based rock like Radiohead and Coldplay, manufactured pop group Sugababes took best single for Freak Like Me. Gary Numan, whose Are Friends Electric? was sampled on the track, presented the award despite the fact the band members were said to have not heard of him prior to recording the song.
Oasis also lost out in the best live act category to Swedish rock sensation The Hives. Electric Soft Parade won best new act, with veteran Welshman Tom Jones winning the merit award, Liverpool band Echo and the Bunnymen taking the inspiration award and Jamaican reggae legend Jimmy Cliff winning classic songwriter. Best video went to Pink for Let's Get the Party Started, the innovation award went to Depeche Mode, and Moby took best producer. Most of the gongs were voted for by Q readers, with a handful chosen by a Q panel. Readers voted pop svengali and Pop Idol presenter Simon Cowell as the most "unwanted" man in the music industry. | See also: 14 Oct 02 | Entertainment 14 Oct 02 | Entertainment 29 Oct 01 | Entertainment 19 Jun 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
