Wedding marches to top of chart
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
My Big Fat Greek Wedding has been a huge US hit
Low-budget comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding has entered the UK box office charts at number two, with only crop circle chiller Signs keeping it from the top spot.

The film, about a Greek girl trying to win her parents' approval of her non-Greek fiance, took 1.5m in its first weekend at UK cinemas.

In the US, it has been one of the biggest hits of the season, originally being released in a limited number of cinemas in April but gradually becoming a box office phenomenon.

Meanwhile Signs held on to the number one position for a second week, taking 2.6m and bringing its total to 8m since its release last week.

The Bourne Identity slipped one place to number three, while teen thriller Swimfan was a new entry at number four. Insomnia, starring Al Pacino, completed the top five.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was Road To Perdition, which made its debut at number seven after being released on a limited number of screens.

It took an impressive 256,000 from only 32 cinemas across London, suggesting that it is likely to prove popular when it is released nationwide on Friday.

The film, directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes, stars Tom Hanks and Jude Law as gangsters in 1930s Chicago.

Meanwhile, another Bollywood production, Shakti - The Power, entered the charts at number 12.

Based loosely on the Sally Field film Not Without My Daughter, Shakti focuses on a young Indian woman living in Canada, who discovers that her husband's family are involved in terrorism.

It took 106,700 in limited release.

Elsewhere, the summer blockbusters are finally beginning to wind down, with Men In Black 2, Spy Kids 2 and Stuart Little 2 heading towards the bottom end of the chart.

Spider-Man is now the longest running film on the charts, having taken 28.3m after 15 weeks on release.

Signs will face a challenge next week from new releases Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood and teen comedy Van Wilder, as well as the nationwide release of Road To Perdition.
