Add Your Views: My Big Fat Greek Wedding
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
The film depicts the chaotic build-up to the big day
My Big Fat Greek Wedding has proved a slow-burning success at the US box office, and is well on its way to breaking records for an independent film.

"A thin story about love triumphing over everything has been developed into a funny, memorable film that will strike a chord with anyone who has to suffer a loud family at weddings or Christmas, or anyone who loves a happy ending," said BBC News Online's Keily Oakes.

But what did you think? I

Have your say

There is a real issue about the representation of Greek culture and people in this film. I read somewhere that the film could be about an Italian family, a Jewish family, a Mexican family etc. and in many ways this is true.

The film appears to "represent" the experiences of greek americans and reduces their whole cultural experience down to food, outbursts of emotional spontaneity, oppressive patriarchs, and unstable grandparents who are obssessed with ethnicity and the importance of marriage.

The story was a kind of hellenic Cinderella with this overworn and cliched moment when the key female character is changed from an unattractive young girl into a beautiful young woman. Where have we seen this before? Also, is a woman's worth only to be measured by her physical beauty and her marriagibility? The film had a real opportunity to address a number of gritty social issues and instead slouched towards maudlin sentimentality.

The movie was cute. With the movie choices avaliable today, MBFGW is a refreshing alternative. Unfortunately, the movie tries too hard to be cute. At times, the story becomes unrealistic and boring because you know what will happen next. The movie is not great, but it is the best one out there at this time.

A sweet funny movie with no violence but a heart as big as Greece

Robert Hansen, UK
This movie is ridiculous. It was filmed in the netherworlds of reality. What was especially disturbing about the film were the effects of taking a couple of college/university-level courses.

At one moment, the main character is a complete emotional mess. Then she takes a computer class and her life is all better - she gets married and lives happily ever after. I hear that some people like this kind of fluff, but I don't understand the appeal.
Mike, UK

Finally a romantic comedy that is portrayed with people that look and act real. I loved every aspect of it, not to mention the fact that Nia Vardolas is a Canadian. It made me wish that I was Greek.
Sarah, Canada

Outrageous humour, it catches you on the dialogue and funny situations.
Bill, US

A great movie. I got pulled into it on a date and loved it.
Irwin, USA

A sweet funny movie with no violence but a heart as big as Greece. It's bound to make Windex sales skyrocket!
Robert Hansen, Texas

I was on a British Airways flight from London and I really just wanted to go to sleep. I thought one of the movie offerings during the flight would certainly put me to sleep. It was hilarious. I stayed awake and watched the whole thing. My laughter probably kept some of the other passengers awake. A little corny, but definitely entertaining and worth watching.
Steve, US

Funniest movie in years...laughed throughout the entire film. Four Stars!
Barbara, US

It's so refreshing to see a film with no sex and violence and just good honest fun!

Yannie, UK
I found this film very funny, it is a great film to see if you are in need of cheering-up, or just want to see a light hearted comedy, with all that is happening in this world, we could do with more films like this.
Jaine Moore, Brit in USA

Laughed out loud throughout the entire movie. No matter what your ethnic background is, you will find a character in the movie who closely resembles one of your own quirky family members.
Raj, USA

It was brill!! Really really funny. It's so refreshing to see a film with no sex and violence and just good honest fun! John Corbett is magnificent but he has got to sort out that long hair thing!
Yannie, UK

Coming from a Greek family, I was expecting to be mildly amused by this film. I didn't expect it to be the funniest movie I've ever seen. What some people might think is a caricature and overgeneralisation is bang on for what I've seen in my family for decades. So many times I've told stories that people couldn't believe as true - they were just too far-fetched. And then to see it all portrayed on the big screen was just great.

And it's a nice happy ending - but a real one, not the old Hollywood tripe of perfection until 15 minutes before the end of the film, when the he said/she said formula almost ruins their chance for a happy ending. It's cute, and Nia Vardalos is adorable... beautiful on the screen and totally believable. As soon as this comes out on DVD, it will be in my library.
John, USA

Downside was predictable, she transformed herself too easily

Mel, UK
Laughed the whole way through this movie - does not matter what your ethnicity is, you can and will relate - DEFINITELY a go-see!!
MBM, USA

Seriously, am I the only person in the world who finds this film disturbing? In the first instance, the boyfriend comes across as a zero-personality zombie who is willing to change just about every aspect of his behaviour (his religion?!?!) in order to get the girl. Secondly, the girl seems happy to watch her control-freak, racist family try to turn her (gasp!) non-Greek boyfriend into a completely different person.

Sorry, but if this was me the movie would be titled "My Big Fat Civil Ceremony Wedding To Which My Dumb Family Are NOT Invited".
Chris, UK

I thought it was a great fly-on-the-wall documentary until someone told me it was a comedy. I used to go out with a Greek girl and I could identify where a lot of the humour was coming from. Never a truer word said in jest? I think so.
David, UK

We didn't know much about the film but it was hilarious and I really, really laughed. Downside was predictable, she transformed herself too easily........
Mel, UK

A real disappointment...merely cute. The author should've let the Hollywood pros pad this thread-bare piece.
Dan, USA

Went to see it with great expectations, but very disappointed

Rene Thompson, California
Am I the only one who thought it a weak plot, predictable jokes and happy that the cinema was giving an offer on ice cream to help me through the boredom?
Vicky, London

I think some people are trying to think too much about this. It was just a warm, witty, comedy. I don't think it was trying to make a political statement... John Corbett - delicious...
Kate, UK

A very entertaining film, especially if you're Greek!!! Looking forward to a sequal!! Bubbles rule.
Nic The Greek, UK

My husband and I took our 9 year old daughter to see this. It made a refreshing change from the usual cartoon pap we see with her! It was silly in some parts, very silly in others, funny throughout and probably the best film we've seen all year.
Linda Fisher, UK

I watched this film on a long flight from New York to Johannesburg and absolutely loved it - very refreshing, funny and left me with a warm, happy feeling - not enough films along these lines. Such a refreshing change.
Anne, South Africa

Greek Wedding is high on entertainment; low on content. Frankly, there's nothing wrong with "high on entertainment" in my books! Great value for the ENTERTAINMENT dollar.
Sally Deutschmann, Canada

The jokes were repetitive, simple, and unoriginal

Emtilt, USA
Went to see it with great expectations, but very disappointed. Just too over the top, unbelievable how she looked initially to new, improved version. The story too far fetched! Mildly entertaining.
Rene Thompson, Canada

What a hilarious film, I watched it with my partner and afterwards I was adamant that I must have a huge family, I have one son and another baby on the way but this film really made me want more! Enough about that though! It is a great film, I loved every bit of it, a must see for anyone and everyone!
Paula, UK

Someone said that if you like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill you would love this film, well they were lying, in comparison this film is absolute rubbish.
Simon, UK

I thought it was horrible. The jokes were repetitive, simple, and unoriginal. The acting was poor. The plot was cheesy.
Emtilt, USA

Great fun. A must see film.
Colleen, Canada

Saw this film last night and enjoyed it a lot. Nothing earth shattering, but a nice funny film with plenty of laughs. Makes a change from the relentless action movies - slick but totally devoid of heart. (eg The Bourne Identity).
Cathy, UK

It reminded us of every Greek wedding or party we have ever been to

Anne, Canada
Having survived seven tempestuous years with a Greek-American woman, I found the film both poignant and hilarious.
Gifford Maxim, USA

Another unfunny, pathetic try at comedy! Good enough for a viewing on Channel 5 maybe? Nuff said....
Andy B, Birmingham, UK

This is an appalling film, shocking story line, poor humour and an unbelieveably poor, predicable and pathetic ending.
Ed Reid, England

Saw it last night; thought it was the funniest film I'd seen in a long time. What I found particularly refreshing was that the characters seemed real, and have the same problems as normal people, rather than conforming to the Hollywood-norm by being perfect in every way. I also like the Windex!
Matt, UK

Absolutely loved this movie. We laughed from beginning to end. We have good friends who are Greek and they had recommended this one to us. It reminded us of every Greek wedding or party we have ever been to.
Anne, Canada
