The exhibition features the iron which EastEnders character Little Mo used to attack violent husband Trevor in a storyline last year. The ashtray which Steve Owen used to kill ex-girlfriend Saskia in another storyline is also on display. The soap is produced at the BBC's Elstree complex, which is also home to Holby City, and until recently its offices doubled for the school in Grange Hill.
The first three Star Wars films, The Shining, and 2001: A Space Odyssey were made at the studios, and the exhibition features replicas of the Darth Vader, C3P0 and R2D2 costumes. Film-making in the area began in 1914 when the Neptune studio opened. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s it was best known for making programmes for Lord Grade's ITV company ATV, such as The Saint and The Persuaders. The BBC bought it in 1984. The EMI Elstree studios - now the Elstree Film and Television Studios - were opened in 1926 and now include the tallest sound stages in the UK, and nine-feet deep water tanks. Recently the Big Brother house was built on the site, and TV quiz Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is filmed there. Although the facilities are in Borehamwood, just north of London, they are named after the neighbouring town of Elstree. The exhibition - at the Elstree Film and Television Studios - is open until 1 September. | See also: 07 Aug 02 | Entertainment 30 May 02 | Entertainment 14 Jun 01 | UK 02 May 02 | Entertainment 26 Feb 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
