| Wednesday, 7 August, 2002, 10:05 GMT 11:05 UK Stone Roses star sings his own tune ![]() Squire (left) first found success with the Stone Roses Former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire will sing lead vocals for the first time on his debut solo album, he has revealed. The album - Squire's first new material for five years - has been described as a collection of simple songs with an acoustic sound that is reminiscent of Bob Dylan.
Squire became one of the most revered guitarists in UK rock after helping the Stone Roses to success in the late 1980s before forming his own band, The Seahorses. He said he had looked for a different singer, but none were right and ended up working alone. "It was the first time since the Roses that I didn't have a plan," he said. But he decided to take on the vocal duties himself because he did not want "my ideas refracted through someone else", he said. A spokesman for Squire said Stone Roses fans would like it, and that they would be quite surprised by the sound of his voice. Choir His backing band includes three acquaintances who are relatively unknown musicians. Squire has sung on record before - but only as part of a campfire choir that appeared on the song Tightrope on the Stone Roses' second album, Second Coming. He found fame when the Stone Roses rose out of the Manchester "baggy" scene with their 1989 debut, which many people consider to be one of the best albums of the last 20 years. Squire left in 1996 and formed his own rock group, The Seahorses, with Chris Helme on vocals, who released one album and enjoyed chart success but less critical acclaim. The new album will be released in the UK on 16 September. | See also: 23 Oct 98 | Entertainment 13 Sep 01 | Entertainment 03 Sep 00 | Entertainment 20 Dec 01 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
