The latest Austin Powers film, Goldmember, has shot to the top of the UK and Ireland box office, knocking Scooby Doo off pole position after a fortnight.

Despite largely poor reviews the film, which also opened in the US over the weekend and made �45m, took �5.5m in its first three days on release in the British Isles.

Goldmember is the third film in the Austin Powers series, and sees Mike Myers reprising his role as the time-travelling superspy and his arch nemesis Dr Evil.

Scooby-Doo fell to number two, although it continued to be popular with audiences, making �1.2m over the weekend.

The live-action version of the classic 70s cartoon has made nearly �13m since its release three weeks ago.

Last week's highest new entry, Stuart Little 2, dropped two places to number four with �877, 159.

The continuing adventures of the mouse adopted by a human family has made �3.8m to date.

The only other new entry in this week's top 10 was The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, the first film from wildlife expert Steve Irwin.

Irwin and his wife Terri play themselves in the action comedy, which sees them and the CIA on the trail of a crocodile which has swallowed a top-secret US satellite beacon.

The film took �206, 803 from 258 screens - almost half the number showing Goldmember and Scooby-Doo.

Meanwhile Devdas, the Bollywood film released all over the world three weeks ago, dropped to number eight on the chart. So far it has taken �1.1m from a limited release.

Sunshine State, the latest film from offbeat director John Sayles, opened on 15 screens and scraped into the charts at number 14.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones finally dropped out of the top ten after 11 weeks on release. So far it has made �37.2m, making it the biggest grossing film of the summer.

This week sees the release of Men In Black II, while a further string of blockbusters, including sci-fi comedy Eight Legged Freaks, sequel Spy Kids 2, and action thriller The Sum Of All Fears - are all due on UK screens over the next fortnight.
