Scooby snaps up box office
Scooby Doo
Poor reviews have not kept audiences away from Scooby-Doo
Scooby Doo has knocked the Tom Cruise blockbuster Minority Report off the top of the UK and Ireland's box office chart in its opening weekend, taking 5.1 million in three days.

Audiences were undeterred by the poor reviews given to the film, a live-action remake of the classic Hanna Barbera cartoon featuring a computer generated version of the crime-fighting canine.

Scooby-Doo, which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr, has already been a huge summer hit in the US and Canada, where it looks set to pass the $150 million (98 million) mark within weeks.

Meanwhile cinemagoers continued to flock to Minority Report, giving it a weekend tally of 2.3 million. It has now made nearly 10 million after just a fortnight on release.

Resident Evil, based on the best-selling game and directed by British film-maker Paul Anderson, entered the charts at number three with 801, 626. Spiderman dropped to number four in its fifth week at cinemas.

The top five was completed by the Bollywood epic Devdas, which made 466, 370 from just 54 screens.

The much-publicised film, based on a 1917 novel by Bengali novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, tells the story of a young man who is torn between two loves - a courtesan, and his childhood sweetheart, who is married to someone else.

Devdas debuted well despite limited release

It is said to be the most expensive production ever made in India, with lavish costumes and sets pushing the budget up to $10 million (6.5 million).

The only other new entry in the chart came from offbeat Argentinian thriller Nine Queens, which opened in a limited release across the UK and debuted at number 12 with 49,438.

The season's biggest film remains Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones, which has made nearly 37 million after nine weeks on the chart.

However, the next few weeks are bringing a string of summer sequels to screens - Friday sees the release of Stuart Little 2, the following week Austin Powers: Goldmember arrives in cinemas, and Men In Black II is scheduled for release on 2 August.
