| Monday, 15 July, 2002, 09:49 GMT 10:49 UK Men in Black hold off Hanks ![]() Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith try to keep order Sci-fi comedy Men in Black II has kept its rivals off the top of the North American box office, enjoying a second week at number one. Oscar winner Tom Hanks' crime thriller the Road to Perdition had to settle for number two in its debut week. Men in Black II, which reunites Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, landed box office takings of $25m (�16m) across the US and Canada. This brings its total receipts since its was released over Independence Day weekend to $133m (�85.4m).
This is the second movie from British director Sam Mendes, who won an Oscar for American Beauty in 2000. The movie took $22m (�14m) in its opening weekend but was playing in less than half the number of cinemas as Men in Black II. Halloween returns Dreamworks studio is rolling out the film at a slower pace than the usual big blockbusters because it is convinced its target audience of over-35s will not rush out on the first weekend to see a film. Making its debut at number three was Matthew McConaughey's apocalyptic thriller, Reign of Fire, featuring a brood of dragons.
Adam Sandler's Mr Deeds slipped from number to two to five, with its total takings hitting $99m (�63.6m). Australian naturalist daredevil Steve Irwin's The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course reached an impressive number six in its opening week, with receipts of $10m (�6.4m).
