| Tuesday, 2 July, 2002, 11:32 GMT 12:32 UK Magical, messy Glastonbury Hundred Reasons performed in Leeds before Glastonbury The Glastonbury Festival is over for another year and for Hundred Reasons guitarist Larry Hibbitt it was amazing to play in front of fans who can sing their songs. Waking up in the middle of a festival is always an adventure, especially when it's the biggest festival site in Europe. Our overnight drive from last night's set in the beautiful Town Hall of Leeds ended in Glastonbury at about 4am, but being a reasonable human being I didn't get up until about 9:30.
I was soon lost somewhere near the Pyramid Stage, but luckily managed to stumble upon an equally lost food stall that sold me a fantastic bacon roll. This done I reconsidered my plans of exploration and retreated back to the bus for a large coffee. Other bands The next few hours were fairly standard festival ones; lots of hanging around watching bands and never wandering too far in case an interview crops up.
I definitely did not watch Rolf Harris. By now it's getting dangerously close to gig time so I get my smelly clothes off the bus and go to get changed and warmed up in the dressing room portacabin, but not before a radio interview and several embarrassing Japanese TV idents. The set itself definitely lived up to our expectations. Having spent the last few weeks playing to European festival crowds who simply ask "Hundred what?" it was amazing to play in front of a large group of people who actually have our record. White Russians People were singing along from start to finish and for once in our lives we managed to play not only in time and at the right speed but largely in tune as well. Back of the net!
Everyone seemed to have had a genuinely good time. Mission accomplished. This done, I tried in vain to find some of my mates and a family member. It's at this point that it first struck me how huge the site was. I'd been casually wandering around for hours and still hadn't covered a quarter of what was there. Energy I'd run out of bands I wanted to see by now so I fell asleep on the bus for a few hours and waited for the rain to stop. By the time I woke up, Air were finishing their set (or was it the first song?) and it seemed like a good time to go for a wander. At about 1am I finally found the energy and ventured out to look at the aftermath of three days of love and peace.
This is the cynic in me. Glastonbury never plays the music I want to listen to and I don't like sitting in mud so why should I go, right!? Actually, I think I was wrong. It's true, that during the day I found it to be an irritating mixture of bad bands and corporate sponsored free love, but the hour or so I spent walking through the green fields, Jazz World and endless bonfires were truly magical. Messy, but magical. I found it to posess the sort of atmosphere that you simply can't bottle. Completely lost It exists here at this time and here at this time only. Forget the bands - sleep all day and build a bonfire. That's what I'm going to do next time. When I could walk no longer I headed back to the bus to catch the 3am departure, but not before getting completely lost (again). Arriving back at the Other Stage, I paid one last visit to a friendly portaloo, then went to sleep for a very long time. |
