| Sunday, 23 June, 2002, 11:50 GMT 12:50 UK Kermit to enter Walk of Fame Kermit remains popular after many years Kermit the Frog and Martin Scorsese are to be honoured on Hollywood Walk of Fame next year. The green-hued muppet and the Goodfellas and Taxi Driver director have little in common, but they will be joining actors Kevin Bacon, Robert Duvall and Susan Sarandon in getting a star on Hollywood Boulevard. Kermit remains a global cult figure decades after his debut on the Muppet Show, and is being honoured in the television category.
Hollywood's ceremonial mayor Johnny Grant, who is also chairman of the Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, was one of those who picked next year's celebrity recipients from a batch of nominations. He said: "This year's honourees met all the criteria in longevity, professional achievement and contributions to the community." The 2003 Walk of Fame recipients in the television category include Beau Bridges and the Osmond Family. Meanwhile, Michael Bolton and Carole King will be honoured in the recording category. Dedication ceremony Recipients were chosen from hundreds of nominations and ratified by the Chamber's Board of Directors. Each year there are at least 300 requests, from fan clubs, publicists and others, for the 15-20 stars that go to famous names. To be given the honour, a celebrity must have achieved fame in movies, television, radio, music or live performance. They must also pay around 11,000 for the honour which covers the dedication ceremony and the making of the star. Another requirement is that they attend the dedication ceremony. | See also: 13 Apr 02 | Entertainment 23 May 01 | Entertainment 21 May 02 | Entertainment 08 Mar 02 | Entertainment 06 Dec 00 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
