British actors were honoured at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles, as the Lord of the Rings and Moulin Rouge scooped prizes.

The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings was voted best movie, beating Black Hawk Down, Legally Blonde, The Fast and the Furious and Shrek.

Kent-born Orlando Bloom picked up the male breakthrough performance award for his turn as the elf archer Legolas.

Ewan McGregor was also honoured as Moulin Rouge picked up best musical sequence.

But co-star Nicole Kidman - who also won best female performance for the Baz Luhrmann fantasy - said she was disappointed not to have triumphed in the best kiss category.

Accepting the award, the 34-year-old joked: "I'm really bummed we didn't get best kiss, we should have rehearsed more, we needed to kiss more, Ewan."

She also told the MTV audience: "You guys supported me through a really difficult time, you went and saw my films which is lovely."

Bloom beat off competition from Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, Colin Hanks, Paul Walker and DMX to take the breakthrough award.

Bloom, who was not at the annual awards ceremony, was delighted with the honour.

Scott honoured

He said: "I'm flattered, the experience of working on The Lord of The Rings was life-changing. I hope you enjoy the second one."

Best action sequence went to British director Ridley Scott's movie Black Hawk Down, much criticised in the UK for its portrayal of US military action in Somalia.

The ceremony also saw Ozzy Osbourne's teenage daughter Kelly make her singing debut at the show - watched closely by her brother Jack, who videotaped her performance from his seat in the audience.

Kelly, who has become a household name in America thanks to the success of fly-on-the-wall reality show The Osbournes, performed her first single - a cover of Madonna's classic Papa Don't Preach.

Backstage, she admitted to being "so nervous" about her debut live performance.

Ali win

She said: "I had one go through with friends and family at the Viper Room and then this was the first time I have performed in front of more than 10 people."

Will Smith, who missed out on an Oscar earlier this year, was named best male performance for his role as Muhammad Ali in Ali and Reese Witherspoon took the award for best comedy performance for Legally Blonde.

The award for best kiss went to two male actors - Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott for the comedy American Pie 2 while Denzel Washington was named best villain for his role as a maverick cop in thriller Training Day.

Singer Britney Spears missed out on the award for breakthrough female for her debut movie role as Lucy in Crossroads.

The awards, voted for by MTV viewers in the US, will be broadcast on MTV in the UK and Ireland on Saturday 15 June.
