| Wednesday, 8 January, 2003, 16:08 GMT P&O Princess approves Carnival deal The UK cruise operator P&O Princess has formally backed a 3.3bn ($5.3bn) bid by US cruise giant Carnival. The move means the battle for P&O Princess is nearly over. Shareholders of both firms will be asked to give the deal their blessing in March. P&O had originally aimed to merge with its smaller US rival, Royal Caribbean. Carnival's rival bid was at first rejected, but P&O switched sides last year when US and European competition regulators cleared both deals. Carnival's agreement to run the new firm as a dual-listed company also helped to persuade P&O. The dual listing means the two firms will retain their separate stock market listings, but will have one management. | See also: 25 Oct 02 | Business 19 Jun 02 | Business 27 May 02 | Business 23 May 02 | Business 18 Feb 02 | Business Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Business stories now: Links to more Business stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
