Richard Poore, a cameraman for a New Zealand TV company, was on holiday in the resort town of Kuta in Bali when an explosion ripped through a busy nightclub.

Speaking to the BBC he described what he saw:

They were very much all tourists. The few bodies that I did see were all locals, but the whole place was just packed full of tourists

"About 20 minutes before the incident happened we were actually standing in the restaurant, but we decided - just due to the fact that the restaurant was really full - that we wouldn't go in that night," Mr Poore said.

"We had just returned to the hotel, some 500 or 750 metres down the road when there was a huge explosion. The windows of the hotel blew out, the upper floors have lost their ceilings and dropped in and there was an incredible amount of smoke in the sky."

Flames everywhere

Mr Poore explained that his "first instinct was to run up the road with a camera" to film the scenes of devastation.

"I have just never seen anything like it. It was horrendous. Total carnage," he said.

"The Sari Club where the explosion first occurred was engulfed in flames. The club opposite, was also engulfed in flames. There were vehicles on the road that were on fire. People running everywhere. Just incredible scenes," Mr Poore said.

"I saw probably three, maybe four bodies that weren't moving. There were limbs - it was not a pretty sight."

Rumours flying

When asked how many of the victims were likely to be holidaymaking foreigners Mr Poore said:

"They were very much all tourists. The few bodies that I did see were all locals, but the whole place was just packed full of tourists."

Mr Poore said that rumours were flying as to the cause of the explosion, but he himself was uncertain whether it was a bomb or an accident.

"It is very hard to say. The explosion was just phenomenal, it was so loud and as I say at a hotel nearly a kilometre away the top floors fell in."

Mr Poore said that the explosion had created fear throughout the holiday resort, with most foreigners, himself included, now keen to leave.

"I am very frightened and I am probably on the next plane out of here. The mood is very sombre... everyone is sitting around the hotel pool. It is just terrifying - I have never seen so many people so badly burnt. It was just awful," he said.
