At least five people have died after a typhoon struck the east coast of China.

Among those killed were migrant workers whose house was blown down in Shanghai.

Other areas of China, including Shaanxi province in the north, have been hit by torrential rains.

The storm has abated, but South Korea is on alert as the centre of the storm is expected to reach the peninsula on Saturday.

Meteorologists said more than 30 centimetres (12 inches) of rain had already fallen on the island of Jeju, where a 45-year-old man drowned after high waves washed him away.

The storm is the remnant of Typhoon Rammasun, which was downgraded after it lost some strength on Friday when it brought bad weather to China, Japan and South Korea.

Pacific storm

In Taiwan, suffering from one of the worst droughts in recent years, torrential rain brought relief and a probable end to water restrictions.

A second typhoon, Chata'an, battered the US Pacific territory of Guam with 120mph winds which left the island without electricity.

No deaths were reported.

Earlier this week, Chata'an struck Chuuk, one of the four states in Micronesia, and caused nearly 40 deaths and 100 injuries.

Many of the deaths on Chuuk were on the island of Tonoa, disaster official John Sound said.

"Whole families are just left with one or two people," he said.

Residents on Guam cancelled 4 July independence day celebrations and stocked up on supplies ahead of the typhoon.

Heavy rains along the Chinese coast were not expected to add to China's severe flooding crisis inland.
