A bullet that killed an Indonesian judge came from a gun linked to former President Suharto's son Tommy, a court has heard.

The bullet came from one of six guns found at homes owned by Tommy, a police colonel said.

Tommy - whose real name is Hutomo Mandala Putra - is on trial accused of masterminding the murder of Supreme Court judge Syafiuddin Kartasasmita last July.

If convicted he could face the death penalty.

At the time of the murder, Tommy was on the run from a jail sentence handed down by the judge for a corruption conviction.

The conviction was controversially overturned in October and Tommy was arrested a month later after about a year in hiding.

Lieutenant Colonel Homsi Safrian Simin told the court the bullet that killed Judge Kartasasmita came from a 9mm revolver found when police raided two homes owned by Tommy.

Prosecutors have said the guns belonged to Tommy but he has denied it.

Drive-by shooting

On Wednesday, Tommy asked the five-judge panel to order a second, independent, examination of the bullet. But the judges said they would consider his request at a later date.

The doctor who did the autopsy of the murdered judge testified on Wednesday that two gunmen fired three shots into the judge's car as he drove to work.

One hit the windshield, a second hit the judge's hand and the fatal shot went into his head, the doctor said.

The two gunmen were sentenced to life in prison and a third man, who recruited the gunmen, has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Father's health

In addition to the murder charge, Tommy also faces charges for arms possession and for being a fugitive from justice.

The high-profile trial, which began in March, is one of a series of trials seen as a test of President Megawati Sukarnoputri's pledge to clean up the legal system.

On Tuesday doctors examined Tommy's father, former President Suharto, to see if he was fit to stand trial for alleged corruption during his 32-year rule which ended in 1998.

Suharto was put on trial two years ago on charges that he stole more than $550m when in office, but the trial was halted after his lawyers argued he was mentally unfit to testify after suffering a stroke.

The new medical checks were ordered by the attorney general after 81-year-old Suharto was reported to be in apparent good health at a recent family wedding.

Doctors are planning to run more tests before a final diagnosis is made.
