The President of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, has vowed to keep all imprisoned left-wing rebels in jail, despite a recent ruling that some anti-terrorism laws used to convict them violated the constitution.

Mr Toledo acknowledged that the ruling could lead to new trials, but said he would seek to introduce measures to prevent the release of those convicted.

Legal experts say last week's ruling by the Constitutional Court could lead to a flood of appeals for re-trials by hundreds of inmates including the leader of the Maoist Shining Path rebel group, Abimael Guzman.
