| Saturday, 28 December, 2002, 09:36 GMT Election diary: Mombasa opposition celebrates ![]() The opposition is confident of victory in Mombasa
It is 0600 local time (0300 GMT). I have just finished the morning show in Swahili for the BBC World Service. Outside, the street party is still going on as I stumble out of my hotel room into the morning sunlight. I am reminded by the noise and crowds that the festive mood - conspicuously missing on the voting day - was back in town.
It has been an extraordinary night. Minutes after the early unofficial results started trickling in, Mombasa burst into song and dance. By midnight, it was abundantly clear the opposition had had a clean sweep here. The first casualty was one of the big men from the ruling Kanu party, Sharif Nassir. A shadow of himself these days due to old age and ill health, Mr Nassir had been trounced by a younger man from the opposition, losing a parliamentary seat he has occupied for 27 years. In the other three Mombasa districts, the main opposition group, Narc, was headed for a major victory in all four parliamentary seats, after taking all the civic seats in town. Early results of the presidential race mirror the same trend. Narc's presidential candidate Mwai Kibaki - the man with a sprained arm, bandaged leg and a neck condition from a car accident three weeks ago - had three or four times as many votes as Kanu's candidate Uhuru Kenyatta. Back in my hotel room and time to catch a few hours sleep. Click here to read Gray Phombeah's previous election diary |
