Firm proud of �1m Wimbledon roof

The sight of of tennis fans huddled under umbrellas in the rain at Wimbledon will be a thing of the past, because Centre Court has a new retractable roof.

A engineering company says it is proud to have played its part in the construction of the new retractable roof at Wimbledon's Centre Court.

The new-look tennis arena has been unveiled to fans for the first time.

3Ks Engineering in Llanelli won a £1m contract to build the panels which will open and close above the court.

Each of the 28 panels weigh 16 tonnes, and all 60 members of staff at the company had been working around the clock to meet the project deadline.

The company won the contract because it was the only one in the UK where the panels could be fabricated, machined and assembled on one site.

The last of the panels were taken to London just before Christmas.

Sales and marketing director Rob Griffiths said 3Ks involvement had brought the company a lot of positive recognition.

"We obviously pleased to have been involved in such a prestigious project," he added.

He said it was hoped some of those who had worked on the order would be able to visit Wimbledon before this year's tournament starts.
