Hospital campaign goes to Senedd
Withybush protestors at the Welsh assembly
The protest was taken to the Senedd building in Cardiff
Campaigners opposed to plans to shut or downgrade a Pembrokeshire hospital have taken their fight to the Welsh assembly in Cardiff.

A three-month consultation is under way on a review of services that could see Withybush Hospital close to make way for a "super hospital" further east.

Up to 200 people, including staff and patients, marched in Haverfordwest then travelled to the Senedd in Cardiff.

In the past few weeks over 2,000 people have attended consultation meetings.

One of the most controversial options put forward in the review is closing Withybush and West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen, and building a new hospital somewhere between the two.

The review is conducted by a team across all local health boards and trusts in the area and also affects the future of hospitals in Swansea, Llanelli and Aberystwyth.

The review board wants to move towards centralising specialist care.

Withybush Hospital campaigners
About 100 people joined Tuesday morning's protest

About 100 people marched from Withybush Hospital to the centre of Haverfordwest where they were being joined by more protesters for the bus trip to Cardiff.

Traffic was brought to a halt as a police escort marshalled the march.

Dorian Davies, from Clunderwen, said the reason he joined the march was because of the treatment his father received at the hospital.

"He had two heart attacks back in February but thanks to the coronary care unit he is on the mend," he said.

"If he had had to travel as far as Carmarthen he would not be here today."

One of the protest organisers Maureen Molyneux said that they had already been to the assembly last November to seek assurances about the future of the hospital.

"We were told then they were absolutely no plans to downgrade or shut Withybush hospital - that's now option one and two that have been put out for consultation."

Why take away local safe effective services
Consultant Chris Overton

Protesters were joined by hospital staff including some consultants.

Consultant Chris Overton said he hoped the show of public support would persuade decision-makers.

"Why take away local safe effective services?," he asked.

Three options have been put to members of the public at consultation meetings held in Pembrokeshire in recent weeks.

One is for the new "super hospital" and another would see Withybush become a "network" district hospital with more complex or acute services at Carmarthen.

But the option to retain Withybush and develop services there won overwhelming support.
