The market will be held in the shadow of the castle |
The historic castle town of Kidwelly held its first open air market for almost 50 years this Easter. Tourism and trade operators believe the event on Easter Monday will provide a boost for the town.
A cattle mart used to be held every Monday in the shadow of the imposing castle but the tradition died out in the early 1950s.
Now it is being revived and weekly markets are to be held every Monday throughout the summer.
Kidwelly Trade and Tourism Association chairwoman Margaret Morgan said the idea was to breathe extra life into the town.
 Margaret Morgan: 'Support' |
"There was a market here, which died out in the early 50s and a lot of people remember it," she said.
"We are holding this market on a Monday, which is the day it was held on for years.
"Hopefully everybody would support it. Kidwelly needs a boost and I am sure it would attract extra people and all traders would benefit as a result."
She said a huge range of goods including clothes, arts and crafts, food and sports goods were on sale.
Car park
Planning permission was granted for the event at Parc Stephens earlier this year and M&B Market Promotions will oversee the running of the venture.
Ian Tobin, a partner in the company, said: "The market will run from Easter until the end of September and we have tried to ensure a wide range of goods.
"It will also have its own car park right next to the market."
Carmarthenshire Council's parks and open spaces manager David Bannister said: "We were asked to look at this by the Kidwelly Trade and Tourism Association.
"It will be a weekly open-air market which will run throughout the summer."
