Phonics' postcards from America
Kelly Jones
Kelly Jones is sending messages home from his tour
Stereophonics front man Kelly Jones has been sending surprise postcards home from his tour in America.

The rock star has been mailing the cards to his local weekly paper in south Wales, The Cynon Valley Leader, telling about his US adventures.

Two postcards have arrived from the singer from Washington DC and Mount Rushmore.

The paper which covers the hometown of the band has described the postcards as a "nice touch".

"The postcards came out of the blue," said reporter Nathan Bevan.

We've just realised we've left one of the boys in a truck stop four hours back and now we gotta turn around!

"The first one we had was from the Hotel Monaco in Washington DC and it was the morning of their first gig.

"And the next one followed about two weeks later from Mount Rushmore," he said.

The postcards describe venues where the band has played so far and Kelly reveals that life on the road is far from simple.

"We've just realised we've left one of the boys in a truck stop four hours back and now we gotta turn around!," he writes.

"Eight hours over time, he's cold, no money, no phone surrounded by nutters. Ha ha!"

I think it is a really nice touch

Last September, the band hit the headlines after the sacking of drummer Stuart Cable.

It was feared the dismissal would lead to the break up of the group but Kelly Jones along with bandmate Richard Jones have continued to grow in success.

Staff at the paper hope Kelly will continue sending postcards from his US tour.

"We are the band's home paper and we have been with them from the start when they were playing at local clubs," said Nathan Bevan.

"But since they have hit it big, we have kind of lost touch with them.

"The postcards have come completely out of the blue and it was a bit of a shock to get them.

"Maybe Kelly is feeling a bit detached from his roots and this is a way of connecting with home.

"I think it is a really nice touch and although some cynics might say it is a PR stunt, I think it is genuine and they are from a guy who is just missing home," he said.
