Mobile cinema for rural villages
Mobile cinema (generic)
The cinema will feature some of the latest movies
Going to the pictures to watch the latest blockbuster will no longer mean a car trip for villagers in rural Monmouthshire thanks to a mobile cinema.

Under a new scheme, people will not have to travel further than their village hall to get to the flicks.

A mobile cinema, complete with a 12 feet wide screen, can now be set up at venues across the county.

The launch of the cinema will be held at Llandogo village hall in the New Year.

Emma Cambray, from Monmouthshire Council, has helped organise the scheme.

"We carried out a lot of market research and found that this was something people wanted," she said.

"Monmouthshire has some very rural areas and a lot of people don't want or can't travel to the cities to go to the cinema.

"And we found that a lot of people wanted a cinema nearby, so we applied for funding and have bought this mobile equipment."

The money for the cinema came from Monmouthshire Council along with the Welsh Development Agency.

It will now travel the length and breadth of the county showing new releases.

As well as a 12 foot wide screen, the equipment also includes surround sound.

Cinema goers can expect to pay 3 for a ticket with any profits being ploughed back into the hall used.

"The mobile cinema will not only bring a much needed service to our rural communities but, hopefully, it will also help us to rediscover our traditional community spirit," said councillor Pam Burchill, the cabinet member for the environment.

"People will be able to use the film equipment to act as a catalyst for other community-based activities such as themed parties, sporting events, and educational purposes."

Simon Davies, the treasurer of Llandogo Millennium Hall said: "Bringing films to the village will provide entertainment for people, especially children, who have trouble getting to Monmouth or Chepstow."
