Money for extra doctors granted
Llandudno Hospital ward

Extra money will be invested in a north Wales hospital to hire more doctors.

Llandudno Hospital is set to receive 150,000 from the Conwy Local Health Board and North West Wales NHS Trust.

The funding will mean the unit's casualty department will be safeguarded until April 2007 and doctors will continue to be on hand 24-hours a day.

Many people feared the service would be slashed without the extra money pledged for February 2006.

"I welcome the additional investment... it safeguards the current 24-hour doctor led service, which many feared to be at risk," said David Owen, Chairman of Conwy Community Health Council.

Staff at the Trust have been concerned that patients could be put at risk if they were brought to the unit with certain life threatening conditions

As well as employing additional doctors, the money will be used to hire healthcare assistants to help reduce waiting times and overall working hours of staff at the accident and emergency unit.

But, under the plans the department will be re-named the minor injuries unit as it is not fully equipped to deal with life-threatening conditions.

"The accident and emergency department at Llandudno doesn't have the back-up services required for a modern department such as CT and MRI scanners, an Intensive Care Unit and 24-hour trauma service," said Wyn Thomas, chief executive of the Conwy Local Health Board.

"As a result, clinical and management staff at the trust have been concerned that patients could be put at risk if they were brought to the unit with certain life-threatening conditions.

"It is important to stress that the services provided at the department will continue to be delivered by doctors and nurses 24-hours a day, seven days a week."

The extra investment will provide additional doctor cover during the busiest periods of the day.

Over the last four years more than 4.5m has been invested into the Llandudno General Hospital site.

The main development was the 3.4 million extension that includes two wards and a rehabilitation department.

In addition, a ward for the elderly was created at a cost of 500,000 and involved a total refurbishment of the ground floor medical block.
