Elderly residents of a care home spent the night in temporary accommodation, after their care home was flooded.

The 27 residents of the Cilgwyn Manor home in Llangadog were ferried to safety by firefighters using boats on Tuesday.

It took emergency services 10 hours to complete the operation with residents re-housed in hospitals and other homes.

Meanwhile some schools were closed on Wednesday due to overnight flooding.

The evacuation at Cilgwyn Manor began after 1900 GMT following heavy rain across west Wales.

The rescue operation at the home, which became flooded with around four feet of water, was hampered by waterlogged roads in the area.

Social services officials from Carmarthenshire Council were at the scene to make emergency arrangements to find temporary accommodation for the pensioners.

Insp Tom Evans of Dyfed-Powys Police said it had been a difficult time for the residents.

"All of them were quite infirm and elderly. It's been quite a nervous time for them and quite an uncomfortable time," he said.

"They've been well cared for by the staff here and the evacuation has gone quite smoothly."

Widespread flooding

On Wednesday, firefighters were called out to help move cows up to their necks in flood water in a field near Dryslwyn Castle near Llandeilo.

In Carmarthenshire Amman Valley and Ysgol Tregib comprehensive schools and Maesybont primary school near Ammanford were shut on Wednesday due to widespread flooding in the area.

Meanwhile people were taken from their flooded homes by boat in Pwllheli, and houses in Groeslon near Caernarfon and at Llechryd near Cardigan were also affected.

The side of an office building collapsed into the river at Aberaeron in Ceredigion due to subsidence caused by the flooding.

The building in Market Street was believed to be empty, and nobody was injured. In Gwynedd, four workmen were taken to hospital on Tuesday morning after their roadside cabin was crushed by a landslide near Llyn Ogwen, Bethesda.

One was kept in hospital overnight after suffering a broken leg.

There was disruption to rail services across Wales on Wednesday morning and some schools and roads were closed.
