Kayak four in South Atlantic bid
Peter Bray
Peter Bray said climbing Everest would be an easier challenge
A team of four are preparing to attempt the first ever kayak circumnavigation of South Georgia in the South Atlantic.

The team includes Nigel Dennis, 50, who runs the Anglesey Sea and Surf Centre in Holyhead.

Next month's challenge will be led by ex-SAS diver Pete Bray, 48, who lives in Pembrokeshire.

The other members are Jeff Allen, 43, from Cornwall and, a woman, Hadas Feldman. The former Israeli soldier, 34, is now a kayaking instructor.

The trip of 420 miles should take the team 10 days, weather permitting.

Meeting some of the local wildlife may be one of the greater challenges
Nigel Dennis

"If we get around it will be a first. Teams from the Royal Marines and New Zealand have tried and failed, " said Pete Bray.

"To climb Everest would be easier. It will be very tough - that is why it has never been done," he added.

This latest trip is the latest in a string of adventures for Mr Bray.

In 2000 he set out on a solo unsupported kayak trip from Newfoundland to the UK - but his tiny craft sank, and he was rescued after 33 hours in the freezing Atlantic.

He made a second, successful attempt in 2002 - and became the first person to paddle solo and unsupported across the Atlantic.

He was awarded a Royal Humane Society medal for the rescue of a fellow crew member on board a boat which split in two during a storm last summer - 300 miles from their destination in Falmouth, Cornwall.

Carniverous

The South Georgia challenge team will travel in single sea kayaks which are 17 to18ft long with compartments for all the kit needed.

Paddling at an average of four miles an hour the team will have to find somewhere to land when they need to rest.

"There are something like a quarter of a million seals on the island, and the fur seals in particular are carnivorous and will attack you," said Nigel Dennis, who completed the first circumnavigation of the British Isles in 1980.

"Meeting some of the local wildlife may be one of the greater challenges."

The Templar Films South Georgia expedition is due to start on 12 November and their progress can be charted on the Nigel Dennis Sea Kayaks website .

The expedition is also aiming to highlight the work of two different charities, Children in Crisis and Tŷ Hafan, a children's hospice near Cardiff.
