Staff sickness and vacancies have forced the closure of a ward for elderly patients at Tywyn Hospital.

The decision to shut Dysynni ward is to be reviewed weekly says the North West Wales NHS Trust.

The trust said it wants to recruit staff and fill four nurse positions.

A spokesman for the North West Wales NHS Trust said: "The ward has been shut because of staff sickness, it's a temporary closure and we are assessing it on a weekly basis."

Three nurses are on long-term sickness, one is leaving and one was on maternity leave.

The trust said the decision was made because of the shortage of eight members of staff.

According to the trust, no patients had to be moved to a different hospital because of the closure.

Two, who were receiving respite care, were discharged following the ending of their stay and one patient was transferred to another ward.

The hospital was opened in August 1920 and the foundation stone was laid by Mrs David Lloyd George.

The hospital was a memorial to those who lost their lives in the World War One.
