The games were first held in 1985

Representatives from the International Island Games Association (IIGA) saw a number of the Anglesey's sporting venues during their tour.

The games, held every two years, promote friendship between the 24 member islands.

More than 2,000 people took part in the 2003 games in Guernsey.

Anglesey (Ynys M�n in Welsh) hopes to beat Aland, between Sweden and Finland, and Saaremaa in the Baltic Sea.

People in Anglesey believe the island will reap the benefits if they host the games, which were first held in the Isle of Man in 1985.

The three-man visiting delegation - association president Bo Frykenstam, and his colleagues Brian Partington and Jorgen Petterson - arrived on Anglesey on Thursday night.

Derlwyn Hughes, chair of the Ynys M�n Island Games Steering Panel, explained the panel had already visited Anglesey's rivals Aland and Saaremaa.

"They will be visiting a number of the island's sporting venues during their two-day tour," he said.

"They will also be sampling some of what the Island has to offer generally.

"We need to show the other member islands that the people of Anglesey support Ynys M�n's bid and the potential benefits to the area should we succeed in bringing the Games here in 2009," he said.

"We would also welcome the backing of people from other parts of Wales and beyond, as Ynys M�n is the only island in Wales which is in a position to consider hosting this important sporting event."

The Guernsey Games in 2003 had over 2,000 competitors, and the event will go to the Shetland Islands in 2005.

Ynys M�n's campaign to host the 2009 Games is a joint bid between the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the Ynys M�n Island Games Association.

All 25 members islands of the IIGA will vote on the bids received, and announce the decision during next year's games.
