Nearly 300 people have been stopped for not wearing seatbelts |
Police in north west Wales are reminding people to wear seat belts in their cars after three deaths in three months. The drivers and passengers killed in the accidents in the Gwynedd and Anglesey areas were not wearing belts.
During the past month 283 drivers in the two counties have been spotted not wearing their seat belts.
The situation has become so dangerous, the region's coroner has called for people to wear them.
"In examination of recent accidents, in most cases the body of the car has survived the impact, but because the occupants have not been wearing seatbelts they have either been thrown around inside the car or thrown out," said coroner Dewi Pritchard Jones.
Mr Pritchard Jones spoke out after a recent inquest into four separate road deaths.
The cause of three of the deaths was due to the victims not wearing seatbelts.
"Forget your seat belt and remember it for the rest of your life," said North Wales Police Inspector Ifan Jones.
"It is often the case that the passengers compartment of these vehicles remain intact and the seconds that it takes to apply a seatbelt undoubtedly saves lives," he added.
The force has already distributed leaflets explaining the consequences of failing to wear a seatbelt.
