'Not enough' back seat belting up
Drivers in the West Midlands are the worst in England for not making sure their back-seat passengers wear seat belts, according to a new survey.

The study by car insurer Zurich found that 34% of drivers were at fault, a higher figure than any other region.

It said a fifth of people in Britain do not buckle up in the back despite the fact they can be fined up to 1,000.

Road safety charity BRAKE has called for more advertising to highlight the dangers of not wearing seat belts.

More dangerous

Campaigns officer Simon Collister said: "You can go through the windscreen at up to 60 times your own body weight."

Zurich spokesperson Maria Donald said not buckling up in the back is more dangerous than people think.

She added: "The point of impact is often at the front.

"But people in the back can injure those in front as well as themselves if they don't wear seat belts."
