The Wellfield Shopping Centre is set to be demolished

The Wellfield Shopping Centre is set to be demolished under the proposals by new owners Cathco with a new shopping parade being built.

The proposals, which will go on show at the town hall on Wednesday, will see retail space expanding to 200,000 square feet, with 13 main stores and a multi-storey car park.

The plans will also see the police station and Victorian magistrates court building making way, with the court due to move to Caernarfon.

A smaller police station will be sited next to the town hall with traffic officers moving to Penrhos.

If planning permission is granted this summer, the scheme could get underway by September.

The new shopping complex would then be ready in time for the start of 2005.

It is understood the property owners are also buying up smaller shops in the centre to help some existing stores and offices relocate and minimise the impact of the development.

Leicester-based Cathco Property Group took over the shopping centre last year.

Nathan Kempin, chairman of the Cathco Group said: "We are delighted to be heavily involved in the regeneration of Bangor town centre.

"This application has been put together after many lengthy discussions with the local authority to formulate our proposals.

"We are confident that the residents will be as thrilled as we are at the improvements that our proposals for the scheme will bring".
