The family centre is in the Caia Park area of Wrexham |
A pensioner is staging a sit-in at a Wrexham day centre in protest at plans to close it. Peggy Jones, 87, refused to leave the Caia Park Family Centre at lunchtime and said she plans to remain there until the evening.
Wrexham Council is considering closing the centre as part of its efforts to streamline care for the elderly.
The council has met to discuss the plan and councillors asked for more time and information to consider options.
Mrs Jones, who has used the centre three days a week for six years, said pensioners relied on it.
She meets up with friends, to chat and play bingo and without the centre she says, she will have nowhere else to go.
"There's a lot of people here, they go home - they're looking at four walls.
"A lot of people rely on this day centre - many of them more so than me - where are they going to go?"
"They come here and have a meal, they have cups of tea and have a game of bingo. They enjoy themselves.
"It's the only company some are able to get," she added.
Wrexham council leader, Aled Roberts, met with Mrs Jones and other pensioners for about an hour on Friday and said he "sympathised" with their concerns.
However he said there were no guarantees of keeping the centre open.
Mr Roberts added he would be meeting with councillors to discuss all options on Monday.
Mrs Jones began her sit-in at 1430 BST and said she would stay there until 2100 BST.
