Party helps estate children
Caia Park Party
Dozens of youngsters attended the party
About 30 children at the centre of rioting on a north Wales estate this summer have been to a party to help them get over the experience.

Caia Park in Wrexham was rocked by two nights of disturbances when Iraqi Kurds living there clashed with locals.

The first outbreak of violence on a Sunday night in early June centred on the Red Dragon pub, where a christening party was taking place attended by families and children.

The pub was pelted with missiles and many of its windows were smashed.

Community leaders said many of the children who were in the pub at the time have been traumatised by what they saw.

"This is not an attempt to be patronising. We just wanted to help the children come to terms with what happened," explained Rosemarie Williams, chief officer for the Caia Park Partnership, whose offices hosted the party.

"Measures are in place to help the adults handle the trauma, but this is about the children, and we wanted to acknowledge that."

Volunteers from the Caia Park estate took ownership of the party, issuing invitations to children and also coming in to help organise the event.

It is the latest in a number of measures to help people on Caia Park following the violence and the dozens of arrests which followed.

Extra community police officers have been drafted onto the estate to tackle problems before they escalate.

The badly-damaged Red Dragon pub has also been repaired and is working under new management.
