The seaside leisure park was once a thriving tourist attraction |
A famous seaside attraction which has lain idle for more than 10 years is set to be given a new lease of life. Ffrith Beach at Prestatyn saw thousands of visitors in the 1970s, but later ran into financial problems when a plan to create a new festival garden failed.
Denbighshire Council has now agreed a deal with a company to redevelop it.
Councillors have approved plans to remove the existing features to make way for a mini-golf course and other leisure-related activities.
The un-named firm, working in partnership with the council, also hopes to provide a range of indoor and outdoor leisure activities, including a soft play area, quad bikes, boating, sport and other recreational facilities.
The local authority hopes rebuilding the park will create up to 15 jobs.
The Ffrith Beach leisure park, which includes a boating lake, was dubbed a white elephant after plans to transform the site into a festival garden ran into financial problems.
Denbighshire Council inherited the site in 1996 from the former Rhuddlan Borough Council and was forced to repay a 750,000 European grant when an investigation found the scheme did not match the original grant application.
In 2004, more than 8,000 householders were asked their opinions on what should happen to the land.
The council said at the time there were strong feelings in the community against selling it to a private developer.
