Campaigners did not want the field to make way for housing |
Campaigners trying to safeguard the future of a Wrexham playing field are celebrating after councillors agreed not to develop it. The Nine Acre site near the town centre was threatened with a housing development.
However, Wrexham Council will look again at their options after 95% of letters received were against the proposal.
A spokesman for the local authority said they "would not go against public opinion".
The Nine Acre field has been predominantly used by children from the Groves High School.
However, the school has now closed under a 20m scheme to make two 'super' schools in the town.
Lynne Hayes started a petition to try to protect the field |
A draft consultation by the council says that from next January the site will no longer be required for educational purposes.
The council asked for local opinions on two proposals.
One was to build housing on a fifth of the site and the second was to develop a third of the site.
Lynne Hayes from Save Open Spaces Wales said she is delighted that the council has listened to public opinion, but she hopes it is not electioneering ahead of Thursday's local elections.
"I sincerely hope that playing fields will continue to be protected after the local elections," she said.
"I want it to be developed so more children will beable to play on it....I hope that they allow local children free access."
Mrs Hayes said that when they held a protest on the field children "came from miles with banners".
"One little boy lived on the Queensway and he'd taken the trouble to walk from the Queensway on his own," she added.
