Ponciau school would be replaced under the scheme |
Campaigners trying to prevent plans to build a 4.2m primary school on playing fields in Rhos near Wrexham want to register the area as a village green. Wrexham Council want to replace the village's three existing English language schools with a new one on Ponciau Banks.
A new Welsh language school would also be opened in one of the existing, older school buildings.
Residents at a meeting in August claimed the new building would prove detrimental to the village.
A unanimous vote was recorded against the plans to build what locals have called a 'super school'.
Local people want to turn their playing fields into a village green |
Local residents argue that registering the fields as a village green would protect them from any future development.
They hope to send their application to Wrexham Council within the next week.
"You have to make an application to register the land, you have to prove the land meets certain criteria," said local resident Alwyn Humphries.
"Historically, I can't think of any other play area in Wales that could have greater history," he added.
Wrexham Council has previously said the scheme needs to be finalised as soon as possible otherwise the 4.2m gifted from the Welsh Assembly Government could be lost.
However, Mr Humphries said that is longer the case.
"I have it in writing from the council that the 4.2m which had been up against a deadline, has been extended by 12 months."
He has also said that the council are looking at additional sites, other than Poniau Banks to build the new school.
"They are looking at extending the Ysgol Hooson and Ysgol Rhos site, the site at Ysgol Grango and the Pant Brickworks[in Penycae].
"The Pant Brickworks has been empty for 10 years."
Mr Humphries said locals must not be complacent and the school development could still go ahead on Ponciau Banks.
"It is important that the school development goes ahead but not on Ponciau Banks," he added.
