A World War II street party has been held in Wrexham to encourage residents from toddlers to pensioners to understand each other.

The Caia Park estate served up spam sandwiches to 120 people and played Winston Churchill's rousing war speeches.

The party was put together on Saturday to encourage young and old to mix.

There had been earlier complaints that the elderly felt intimidated by the estate's youngsters.

"There were children hanging around the shops, they weren't doing anything but the elderly were a bit suspicious of them," said Tristan Thomas from Communities First, a Welsh Assembly regeneration programme.

"We're trying to bring the young and old together," he added.

The group have previously had ice cream parties together and been on an historical trip to Liverpool.

Lil O'Brien, a teenager during the war said the project has helped younger people mix with the older residents and for them all to understand each other.

"We went to Merseyside with the children and we had a lovely day," she said.

"Young children can learn a lot from the older people," she added.
