Motorbike deaths tackled
Bikers generic
A number of bikers have been killed on the regions roads
North Wales Police has become the first force in Britain to acquire a van from the RAC to help reduce the number of motorbike deaths on the region's roads.

The region saw more people die in motorbiking accidents in 2003 than ever before.

The vehicle will be used to promote road safety as part of the force's Bikesafe scheme.

There are over 25 police forces currently offering some form of motorbike safety campaign.

By November 2003, 18 bikers had died on north Wales' roads, the highest annual total ever for the police force area.

Driving skills

In January, a 44-year-old man became the first motorcycle fatality of 2004.

Statistics had shown most of the drivers killed in 2003 were driving high-powered motorbikes on Sunday afternoons in good weather.

The mission of Bikesafe is to assist with the casualty reduction within the government's 2010 national casualty reduction targets.

It aims to educate motorbikers and encourage them to seek out further training to improve their driving skills.

"We are delighted to receive the van which will help promote the initiative both in north Wales and across the country," said Inspector Steve Green, UK Bikesafe co-ordinator.

"Bikesafe is aimed at reducing the number of motorcycle deaths by providing a number of strands of information," he added.

North Wales Police will run workshops over nine weekends during the summer for motorbikers keen to hone their riding skills.
