A record number died on north Wales' roads in 2003 |
A 44-year-old man has become the first motorcycle fatality of 2004 in north Wales just days into the New Year. The region, which saw more people die in motorbiking accidents in 2003 than ever before, has been the subject of a high-profile anti-speeding campaign in an effort to cut road deaths and injuries.
The man died following an accident on the A55 at Llandudno Junction in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He was travelling along the roundabout overpass at junction 18 when the fatal incident happened.
Police said early investigations suggested no other vehicles were involved.
They have appealed for witnesses to the accident, which happened at about 0125 GMT.
Signs
By November 2003, 18 bikers had died on north Wales' roads, the highest annual total ever for the police force area.
Unlike Saturday's accident, statistics had shown most of the drivers killed were driving high-powered motorbikes on Sunday afternoons in good weather.
Earlier in the year, Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami had called for warning signs to be erected where accidents occurred as a warning to others to take care.
North Wales Police introduced a no-tolerance policy towards offending motorcyclists.
This angered many who said they were being charged for things car drivers were getting away with.
