Water back on for 10,000 homes

The water supply to around 10,000 homes has been restored in the Penarth area of south Wales after a water main burst on Saturday.

The problem affected the Llandough, Upper Penarth and Penarth Marina areas after an 18-inch cast iron water main burst in Lewis Road, Llandough.

The road was closed while water system engineers, worked with the police and the fire service to undertake repairs.

The main was shut-off at 1300 BST until 1530 BST during the alert.

A Dwr Cymru Welsh Water spokeswoman said the problem had been repaired and water was restored to all affected homes by 2000 BST on Saturday.

She said the mains system had slowly re-charged to avoid water discolouration.

She said the main had burst because of "ground movement" which can be caused by changes in temperature.

Staff for the contractor, United Utilities, used loud hailers to contact some customers in affected areas.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's Special Needs-registered customers received bottled water supplies, and alternative water supplies from tankers were made available for other customers.

All water from tankers had to be boiled before it could be used.
