Success for death road campaign
David Holloway

A Spanish accident blackspot is expected to be improved after a long campaign by the parents of a Flintshire teenager killed on the road.

David Holloway, 17, from Buckley in Flintshire, died after being knocked down by a bus outside a nightclub on the island last September.

Following the intervention of Tony Blair, the Spanish authorities have agreed to make improvements to the road.

Shelagh Holloway said she was delighted that David's death would not be in vain.

"It's really good, we've got what we wanted," she said.

"I just hope they do go through with it and it's a shame it wasn't done a long time ago.

"At the end of the day I don't want David to die in vain, this is positive news," she added.

The teenager had been on the first day of his holiday in San Antonio when he was killed.

Early in the morning - by which stage friends said he was drunk but not worryingly so - he walked out of the club and along the main road where he was hit by a bus owned by one of the all-night clubs.

In July, his death was the subject of discussion at Prime Minister's Questions.

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami asked Mr Blair to look into the deaths of a number of holidaymakers killed on the road.

"This shows that decisive action is now being proposed by the Spanish authorities," said Mr Tami.

"I am grateful to the PM for his intervention," he added.

British consular staff in Ibiza met the president of the island's council, who agreed that the road needed improving.

Any formal proposals need to be approved by the authorities in Madrid.

More than 30 British youngsters - including 19-year-old Rebecca Watkins from Neath, south Wales - have died on the same stretch of road in recent years, according to British officials on the island.

An inquest into Mr Holloway's death in July recorded a verdict that he died accidentally.
