David Holloway was killed on holiday in Ibiza |
A teenager killed on a notorious stretch of road outside a nightclub in Ibiza died accidentally, an inquest has recorded. David Holloway, 17, from Buckley in Flintshire, died after being knocked down by a bus at an accident black spot on the Spanish island last year.
The teenager had been enjoying the first day of his holiday in San Antonio and had spent time at a water park before having a sleep and going to an nightclub with friends.
In the early hours of the morning - by which stage friends said he was drunk but not worryingly so - he walked out of the club and along the main road where he was hit by a bus owned by one of the all-night clubs.
Earlier this month, his death was the subject of discussion at Prime Minister's Questions.
Shelagh and Richard Holloway want justice for their son |
Then Mark Tami MP called on Tony Blair to look into a number of holidaymakers who had died on the road.
He was informed about Mr Holloway's death by his parents, Shelagh and Richard, who were looking for help after the bus driver whose vehicle hit him walked free from court.
The judge went against the evidence of Spanish police, who claimed he could have avoided the teenager who died of multiple injuries.
Mr Holloway was on holiday with Steven Parry - who identified the body and broke the news to his family.
He told the hearing: "I last saw David at the free bar about midnight. David was drunk but not falling about. He knew what he was doing. I had no worries about him."
Mr and Mrs Holloway had been campaigning for a retrial of the driver, and were hoping for an open verdict at Tuesday's hearing in order to bring civil action in Spain.
Speaking outside court, Mr Tami said: "There is clearly disappointment at the verdict. The family were looking to pursue a civil action in Spain - since Ibiza has been a major resort, 35 people have died on this road and it is the biggest killer in Ibiza."
More than 30 British youngsters - including 19-year-old Rebecca Watkins from Neath, south Wales - have died on the same stretch of road in recent years, according to British officials on the island.
Recording a verdict that Mr Holloway died accidentally, Deputy North East Wales Coroner Kirit Champaneria said: "It is my conclusion that this accident came about when the bus collided with Mr Holloway. He had had a drink but....by modern standards it certainly could not be described as excessive."
