An outdoor rink will be erected in Wrexham |
A north Wales town will have a touch of New York about it later this year when an outdoor ice rink is set-up. Organisers hope it will attract thousands of amateur skaters and boost revenue in Wrexham's shops during the run up to Christmas.
The rink, which opens on 29 November, has already proved a winner in other areas of Wales.
The lawn outside the City Hall in Cardiff has previously been transformed into an open-air ice rink in 2001 and 2002.
Two years ago, it brought in 30,000 skaters and more than 100,000 visitors.
Last year it was made 50% larger to cater for the increasing number of visitors over the five weeks that the attraction was open.
Wrexham Council, who have organised the event, hope their ice rink in the north will prove as successful.
"We have all seen New York's outdoor ice rink in the movies and it will be like that in Wrexham," said the local authority's leader Shan Wilkinson.
"Not only will the people of Wrexham have something new and original for the Christmas period but it will bring more people into the town at a peak shopping time."
The rink, which has been manufactured by a company in Cheshire, will be 12m x 10.5m and will be built in the Queen's Square area of the town.
A Santa's grotto and traditional Christmas stalls selling hot chestnuts and toffee apples will also be part of the ice skating event.
