As forecasters predict a hot weekend, organisers of Llangollen's International Musical Eisteddfod are hoping attendance figures will go through the roof.

Thousands of people have already attended the annual event, and chief executive Gwyn L Williams said there is evidence that the eisteddfod has gone from strength to strength.

"There were lots of people out in the town for Tuesday's parade.

"Local people said there were more out than they have seen in previous years.

"We have made no secret of the fact that the eisteddfod has struggled previously financially and attracting younger visitors.

"Looking around the field I have seen a more diverse group of people here this year."

Latest figures reveal there were more than 6,000 youngsters through the gates on Tuesday's children's day.

Visitors to the pavilion will witness the first family day in the festival's 56 year history on Saturday.

Mr Williams said the event offers entertainment for visiting youngsters.

"We're going to have sandpits on the field and lots of activities for them," he said.

"I thought it would be nice for them to have something to do while the men compete in the male voice choir competition."

The Choir of the World will also be selected on Saturday.
