The firm makes fax machines, copiers and printers |
One hundred jobs are to go at the Brother Industries factory in Ruabon, near Wrexham. The company is moving production of its personal fax machines to Malaysia after claims that it is no longer viable to produce them in Europe.
In total 150 jobs will be lost, but 50 staff will be moved to a new project within the electronics firm, recycling toner cartridges.
The company currently employs 280 people.
Spokesman Frank Pipkin said staff were informed of the decision last week.
"Employees took the news with some shock, some people thought it might happen eventually but I don't think they were prepared for it when it did happen," he said.
Typewriters
"The job losses are spread across production and support services."
He said the company had no choice but to make redundancies.
"We manufacture personal faxes here in Ruabon and when the current model gets changed next year, it will be made in Malaysia."
The jobs are expected to go by the end of this year.
The company which also makes typewriters, printers and multi-function machines - a combination of faxes, copiers and printers - says it has no plans to close the Wrexham site and that the remaining jobs are safe.
"We are not shutting the factory. The commitment to the factory in Wrexham is still very much there. We also hope to make sure that all the redundancies will come from volunteers," Mr Pipkin said.
Workers
Managers will be talking to union bosses and Wrexham council has been informed of the job losses.
The region has been hit hard by redundancies in recent months.
In December last year, Fibreglass manufacturer Owens Corning shut its Wrexham factory with the loss of all 230 workers.
Managers had blamed the strength of the pound and were shifting production elsewhere in Europe.
