The old track to Welshpool has been disused since the 1960s |
Ambitious plans have been unveiled to return steam power to a section of railway disused since the 1960s. Proposals include replacing rails on a track to Welshpool, Powys, which was a victim of the Beeching reforms of the rail system in 1965.
The Cambrian Railways' Trust hopes to hold talks with Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones about protecting the track from development.
The trust reopens a mile-long section of track in Shropshire next month.
It is hoped the project linking Wales and England could boost the tourist trade in Powys and Shropshire.
But the Cambrian Railways' Trust said even if it secured funding for the scheme it could be years before the link to Welshpool opened.
'Tremendous boost'
In the meantime, the trust would like the assembly government to protect the old track bed from building projects through Llanymynech, Pool Quay, Buttington and to Welshpool.
Brian Rowe of the Cambrian Railways' Trust said: "It would be tremendous boost to the area, although a lot of work is needed on a track unused since 1964-65.
"It really does depend on the political will, but we hope the Welsh Assembly Government will protect the track on the Welsh side which will give us the opportunity to develop the project."
Mr Rowe said funding could come from the National Lottery or the European Union.
A mile-long section of track at Llynclys, near Oswestry, Shropshire, is expected to open to steam trains from 21 March.
The Welsh Assembly Government has been asked to comment.
