Supermarket plans on public show

Proposals to build a new supermarket on the site of a bowling green are going on display in Powys.

But plans to relocate Newtown Bowling Club in a nearby public park has raised objections and the town's civic society has called them "totally unacceptable".

The club has been based at its existing Back Lane address for 115 years.

A two-day public exhibition to showcase the proposals, which have been submitted to Powys Council, opens on Friday.

The company behind the scheme, J Ross Developments, said it wanted to build a medium-sized foodstore, and a "brand new replacement clubhouse and bowling greens".

The developers claim the scheme will be a boost for the town.

Clare Coghill, a spokeswoman for the firm, said: "It's important for people to come along and let us know what they think.

"We believe our scheme will be much more beneficial to the town than any other proposals."

'Essential'

In May, Newtown Civic Society said the park plans were "totally unacceptable".

It said the park was "an essential part of the town's visual and recreational amenities".

The park, owned by the council, is located behind its offices in the town.

The bowling club scheme is in direct competition with a large out-of-town Tesco application, which is currently being considered by officials at the Welsh Assembly Government.

The public exhibition is being held at Newtown Bowling Club.
