Park bowling club plans opposed
Bowls
Newtown Bowling Club was established in 1892
Plans to relocate a bowling club in a public park in Newtown have been opposed by the town's civic society.

J Ross Developments has submitted an application with the county council for two new greens and a clubhouse.

It is understood the firm wants to develop Newtown Bowling Club's existing site nearby, which has been its home for the past 115 years.

The civic society said the park plans were "totally unacceptable" while the developers are yet to comment.

Powys Council confirmed that J Ross Developments had submitted plans for the new bowling club, but it said it had not received an application relating to the club's existing home.

The park, owned by the council, is located behind its offices in the town.

In a joint statement, John Napier and David Pugh, chairman and president of the civic society, said: "Having seen the plans Newtown Civic Society is totally opposed to this application.

"The park is an essential part of the town's visual and recreational amenities.

"To lose such a large area of our public property for such a purpose is totally unacceptable.

"The existing character of the park will be totally destroyed by the placing of a private club consisting of two large bowling greens and a two-storey club house across its centre."

J Ross Developments has been asked to comment.
