Union talks over council job cuts
Powys Council's headquarters in Llandrindod Wells
The council is facing tough decisions
Union leaders will hold talks with council chiefs in Powys on Wednesday evening over a decision to make more than 60 council workers redundant.

Councillors voted for the cutbacks last month in an attempt to achieve savings of more than 5m.

But Unison, the GMB and the Transport and General Workers' Union have all criticised the way the council has handled the situation so far.

The council said it was complying with policies agreed with the unions.

The unions said it had a mandate from its members to ballot for strike action if the council continued with its "current course".

In response, a spokesman for the council said: "The council is operating within a very difficult financial climate and its main concern is to protect priority services and the council tax payer."

Powys Council currently employs 8,000 people throughout the county.

Among those facing redundancy are legal clerks and some information technology staff.
